Volunteer Spotlight: Aaron & Todd’s Journey

As our clients learn to use devices and the internet, both at our Paddock Wood
centre and through our Outreach team across Kent, our trainers grow alongside
them. By helping others build digital skills, they strengthen their own confidence,
empowered by the impact they make in their community.

Today, we sat down with Aaron and Todd, twins who first joined Compaid as
work experience students. After completing their placements, they chose to stay
on as volunteers in our Paddock Wood centre, inspired by the difference they
saw in the clients they supported, and in themselves.

Tell us a little about yourself and what you do at Compaid

Todd: Hi, my name is Todd, and I volunteer at Compaid, assisting staff and clients with digital skills and general IT support. My role involves helping individuals build confidence when using technology and developing their ability to engage more independently with digital tools in their daily lives.

Aaron: My name’s Aaron, and I’m a Digital Skills volunteer at Compaid in Paddock Wood. I support clients with IT-related tasks and issues ranging from Microsoft tools to art/design applications as well as others. I really enjoy using my knowledge in technology to make things easier for others.

You first joined Compaid as a work experience student; what made you choose to come here?

Todd: I wanted to gain hands-on experience in an environment that makes a genuine difference and positive impact in people’s lives. The organisation’s commitment to supporting individuals through digital inclusion particularly appealed to me, as it aligns with my interest in technology and helping others develop the skills they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

What was your experience like during your work placement with us?

Aaron: It was very positive. Everyone was friendly and supportive, and I got to work on a variety of tasks that helped me develop my technical and communication skills. It gave me a good insight into how technology can support people in their everyday lives.

After your placement, why did you decide to stay at Compaid as a volunteer?

Todd: I found my time at Compaid both rewarding and inspiring. The sense of
teamwork and the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution motivated me
to stay. Volunteering has allowed me to continue learning while supporting others
in achieving their goals.

What is your favourite part about volunteering with Compaid?

Aaron: Definitely the people. Everyone’s welcoming, and there’s a real sense of
teamwork. No two days are the same which allows me to solve different problems
and learn something new.

Todd: My favourite aspect of volunteering is seeing the progress clients make and the confidence they gain when they master new digital skills. It is fulfilling to know that my support can help someone feel more connected and capable in their everyday life.

What is something new you’ve learned while being part of Compaid, either during your work experience or as a volunteer?

Todd: I have learned the importance of patience, clear communication, and adaptability when helping others. I have also gained practical IT knowledge and a deeper understanding of how digital inclusion can transform lives.

What advice would you give to other young people thinking about volunteering?

Todd: I would encourage any young person to consider volunteering. It offers an
excellent opportunity to develop valuable skills, gain experience, and meet new
people, all while contributing to a meaningful cause. Volunteering at Compaid has
been a fulfilling experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to
make a positive impact.

Aaron: Go for it! Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, gain experience
and confidence. It will provide you with knowledge and skills to help others that you
wouldn’t get from a classroom.

Thank you, Aaron & Todd! We are thrilled to have you as part of our volunteering team!
