Our History
Lorna Ridgway, our founder
While volunteering at a Cheshire Home in Tunbridge Wells in the 1980s, Lorna saw the potential of personal computers to open up new opportunities for disabled people. Inspired by what technology could make possible, she began running a day service that used adapted equipment to make computers more accessible.
As interest in the service grew, it moved to Pembury Hospital and, in September 1986, Lorna founded Compaid. Nearly 40 years later, her vision lives on through our work in Paddock Wood and across Kent, helping people build confidence, stay connected, and live more independent lives through digital skills training and accessible transport.

Our People
The people behind Compaid are what make our work possible. From our trustees and staff to our dedicated volunteers, everyone plays a part in helping people across Kent build confidence, independence, and connection.
Our trustees bring valuable experience and guidance that helps shape the future of the charity, while our volunteers support our teams in delivering services that change lives every day. Together, they create a caring and supportive community that is committed to helping people overcome barriers and achieve more.
Our impact
Every year, our services help people across Kent gain confidence, learn new skills, and feel more connected to the world around them.
By creating welcoming and inclusive opportunities, we help reduce isolation and support people to live more independent lives. We’re proud to play a small part in helping individuals, families, and communities thrive.
